True Story: Went to work one day (litigation law firm, providence) on Halloween - everyone got dressed up and, lo and behold, this older, church cult following, weird, pilgrim type lady comes in dressed in a period dress and pinafore (apron) with the bandana on her head and, yes, you guessed it, tons and tons of padding in her back end... so I said, "What are you, Deb?" she says in a matter of fact voice, "Well, I'm a Mammy." "A MAMMY?!!" "Deb, you can't be a mammy in a god damned civil rights law firm... you can't even say Mammy in civil rights law firm... you ARE kidding, right?"
"No, I don't think anything is wrong with it - lots of people had mammies a hundred years ago...my great grandparents even had a mammy... and I'm (get this) honoring the tradition"
"Deb! having a mammy isn't a goddamned TRADITION!" She just stood there confused - Subsequently, she was sent home... she really should have been fired.
