In his life story on A&E, it was said that he felt his strength was in his hair - like Sampson of Bible (and PW) fame. He felt that if he cut it, he would loose his gift. Of course, his mother was crazier than bat-shit,too.
He should have considered a buzz-cut, then he would have looked like a guy.
I heard that he moonlighted as a singer in a Black Sabbath tribute band during the 1980's.
